Meritless lawsuits by aggressive personal injury lawyers are forcing medical liability premiums up and good doctors out of the practice of medicine. Many doctors across the country are cutting back on high-risk services, retiring early and relocating to states with more patient-friendly liability laws – even if they've never been sued.

The result? Patients can't get the care they need when they need it.

We need a fairer, more balanced system – one that protects patients, not personal injury lawyers.

Some states have tried to address the growing crisis with their own legislative reform efforts. Some of these efforts have been successful. Other have not. This has created a patchwork system of health care where that is threatening patients' access to quality care. In the absence of a Federal solution, patients across the country can't be sure they'll get the care they need when they need it.

There are state models for reform that work and can be replicated at the Federal level – laws that make sure patients have their day in court and receive unlimited compensation for things like medical expenses, lost wages, rehabilitation costs, etc. And laws that put more money in the hands of patients, not personal injury lawyers.
